Oman is a top birding destination, known for its warm hospitality, excellent infrastructure, and diverse birdlife influenced by the Indian subcontinent and Africa. The unique mix of habitats and bird species offers a thrilling blend of land and pelagic birding, ensuring an exceptional birdwatching experience set against the backdrop of the country’s stunning landscapes.
To make the most of our birding experience in Oman and yet avoid the long drives through the desert, we designed a 10-day tour based in Salalah, located in the southwest of Oman between the Dhofar Mountains and the Arabian Sea.
Salalah enjoys a milder, monsoon-influenced climate compared to the rest of the country, making it a lush, green oasis. The region exudes a unique charm, reminiscent of the tropical East African coastline, while remaining just a short distance from the stark, arid deserts that dominate much of Oman. This rare combination of climate and geography makes Salalah one of the most bird-rich areas on the Arabian Peninsula. Along the coast, we’ll explore vibrant coastal habitats teeming with shorebirds and embark on two pelagic boat trips from Mirbat, a hotspot for seabirds and marine mammals. These waters are famous for sightings of Blue Whales, Sperm Whales, Spinner Dolphins, and several species of sea turtles, adding another layer of excitement to our journey.
From our base in Salalah, we’ll also venture into Oman’s vast desert interior, offering a stark, yet captivating contrast to the lush surroundings of Dhofar. Throughout the trip we will be targeting species endemic to the Arabian Peninsula, as well as African species at the eastern edge of their range, and many European and Asian migrants.
