We have added two new birdwatching destinations to our program – the islands of Lesbos and Mallorca

We are delighted to introduce you to our new birding destinations, the Mediterranean islands of Mallorca and Lesbos. We have developed two seven-day itineraries that will take you to all the key birding sites on each island, guided by expert birder and guide, and author of two guides to Mallorca, Neville Davies.
Our Mallorca trip is timed to coincide with the likely peak of the spring migration, while on Lesbos most of the breeders will already have arrived. On both islands we will have the flexibility to move freely to where the birding is best.

In Mallorca, we will visit a variety of habitats, including oak and pine forests, marshes, rivers, mountains and the Garigue valleys, one of the most important wetlands in Europe, as well as some sights such as a Roman bridge, fantastic landscapes, orchids and butterflies and, above all, more than 110 bird species, including a new addition to the island, the Moltoni’s Subalpine Warbler and the endemic Balearic Warbler.

Situated in the beautiful Aegean Sea, and 5 miles off the coast of Turkey, the island of Lesbos is a mecca for birds, and not just some great resident species, but a good variety of migrants too.  The main focus of course will be the excellent birdlife, with around 130 species likely during the tour. Specialties we will be looking for include Kruper’s Nuthatch, Western Rock Nuthatch, Cinereous Bunting, Cretzschmar’s Bunting, Ruppell’s Warbler, Isabelline Wheatear and Long-legged Buzzard to name a few.

We will visit a variety of habitats to maximise the amount of bird species we will see, and these include mountain drives (with roadside stops), rivers, marshes, open fields, olive groves, Sweet Chestnut woodlands, salt pans and coastal areas. Walking will be kept to a minimum although some walking is required at some sites, but the distances are short. The pace will be relaxed and steady with plenty of stopping to look at the birds, with wonderful photographic opportunities along the way. There will be some other wildlife of interest to see during the tour, such as Persian Squirrel, Spur-thighed Tortoise, Balkan Wall Lizard,  Roughtail Rock Agama and lots more.
